Matthew Fernandes
I’m a designer based in Wellington, New Zealand, where I craft systems for higher education institutions. My work is driven by a passion for diving into new subjects and learning new skills. I strive to synthesise this passion with my belief in diversity and education, using human-centred design to build a better, more inclusive future.
As part of the Google UX Design Certificate, I developed skills in digital design and prototyping in Figma, as well as Adobe Creative software like XD, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
I have applied these skills through learning design and development projects like the Higher Education Development Centre’s Career Readiness course. I also led a project redesigning the University of Otago Subject Guides, which help 1000s of students and staff members access the Otago library.
My work prior to designing has focused on educating myself on complex topics and using that knowledge to collaborate with learners and users. I previously worked for an immigration firm, studying hardware and software engineering journals to partner with clients in drafting specialised research visas applications. While working as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Malaysia, I explored diverse topics ranging from ecological issues to rhetoric so that I could craft engaging English language lessons.
This drive for learning has fueled my design work, and become an important part of what I love about both education and digital design.
